A Familiar Beginning

Now I believe that those words have brought life to many a story. As far as I know, I have never published a story that started out with those words. Why? I simply do not know the answer to that question.

This is how the story begins and then it follows a natural path from my imagination to the writing that will commence shortly.

Some time later…

Once upon a time there was a man that sat up late. He had found many things to keep himself occupied into the wee hours of the morning. He began by tapping various keys on his keyboard. The idea was to write that perfect story. He wanted to just let his fingers ramble across the keys, but his mind would not let him follow that path.

The fingers knew where they wanted to go, and for the most part they took control of the situation. They were not worried about spelling or grammar for the moment. They had a message from the brain that needed to be put down on the computer screen.

This situation was causing a bit of strife between the ten of them and the single brain that was ultimately in control of the situation.

The man was what a person would call a perfectionist when it came to his writing. There were things that assisted him in his pursuit of high quality. Things such as the advent of the spell check/grammar check programs. Then there was the delete key, that could wipe out everything from a single word, to an entire page if need be. This could be a help for perfection, but it was also a hindrance to creativity and forward motion.

The general consensus among writers was to just write things down in a type of creative blast and then return later in the next phase to clean and polish.

This was something that he was constantly struggling with. He wanted the first draft to be as close to perfect as possible. The ideas flowed and stopped amidst his efforts to make things right. He kind of felt like the person that must form perfect letters when writing something down on paper; perhaps something just as simple as his name.

The time on the clock is 2:43 am.

The words that are showing on the page are as follows:

Once upon a time…
